Design Hotels’ Flushing Meadows opens in Munich

Design Hotels newest member in Munich, The Flushing Meadows Hotel & Bar, gets its name from the glorious fields surrounding both it and the scenic Isar River. Here, 16 rooms welcome, with eleven loft studios individually designed in collaboration with an equal number of prominent creatives.

Architects Sascha Arnold and Steffen Werner, along with gastronomy and marketing guru Neils Jäger, have combined talents to build both a haven and hotspot.

The sixteen-room hotel has eleven Loft Studios on the third floor and an additional five Penthouse Studios on the upper level. The Loft Studios boast four-metre high ceilings, and each has been handed over for interior design to selected personalities including: Austrian actress and singer Birgit Minichmayr, musician Michi Beck, pro-surfer Quirin Rohleder, DJ Hell, and industrial furniture designer Norbert Wangen. The five Penthouse Studios were designed by the architecture firm of Arnold and Werner. Three of them feature private terrace access, and all offer stunning views over the Munich cityscape or Bavarian Alps.

While the room design was a collective effort, the elements unifying the overall concept came from the harmonious use of natural materials. Neutral hues of wood, walls stretched with cool grey canvas panels and copper details create an uncomplicated atmosphere, dotted with artwork by Berlin artist Maximan Rödel. Also from the German capital city, in-room amenities from eco-cosmetic brand Walachei provide guests with vegan and organic options in the well-appointed bathrooms. For the tech inclined, rooms are outfitted with cable-free sound systems with Bluetooth connection, by Ultimate Ears.

Munich mornings will begin with breakfast on the top floor, while afternoons see bar chef Manu Pinciroli serving-up classic cocktails alongside his own creations. Teakwood, oak, and the same canvas panelling seen in the rooms ooze sleek sophistication and an open fireplace draws in cocktailers both local and visiting. With a state-of-the-art light concept by .PSLAB and a south-facing rooftop bar, there’s no shortage of atmosphere. For those seeking a boost, the ground floor organic liquid store Superdanke! is juicing and blending fresh fruit and veggie concoctions.

Located in the popular Glockenbachviertel district, near the the Isar River, the area is brimming with bars, restaurants, boutiques and galleries. The youthful borough is an apt home for the hotel, with an eccentric energy made to match. Hotel guests are encouraged to borrow complimentary bikes from the hip Munich shop stilrad. City explorations are further facilitated by the hotel’s inventive team and their “Outside” city guide presenting insider tips.
