Alvin Jemmott to lead new Barbados Tourism marketing agency

Alvin Jemmott_1Divi Resorts is pleased to announce that Alvin Jemmott, general manager of Divi Southwinds Beach Resort in Barbados, was appointed the first chairman of the board of directors of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI). The new BTMI agency recently emerged from the former Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) and is responsible for the island’s destination marketing. Jemmott’s term as chairman began October 16.

“The transformation from the BTA to the BTMI is a significant landmark in the history of the Barbados tourism industry.  To be the board’s first leader is an honor and special responsibility,” Jemmott said.  He has quickly outlined a few important goals, among them: standardizing the Barbados brand, improving sports tourism activity and seeking new airlift from current and emerging markets.  He also intends to engage the Barbadian Diaspora in all of the country’s major source markets to expand long stay arrivals to the island.

Jemmott is a well-regarded personality and proponent of the Barbados tourism industry, starting as a waiter 32 years ago and rising to a general manager position 14 years ago.  In 2006, he joined Divi Resorts as general manager of their two Barbados properties: Divi Southwinds Beach and Divi Heritage Beach resorts. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Revans University and is a Fellow of International Management Centres Association. He is enthusiastic that his career path will be a motivation to local young hoteliers and students to embrace the industry and make a positive impact on the island.

Said Marco Galaverna, president of Divi Resorts Inc., “Alvin’s selection as chairman of the new BTMI speaks volumes about his industry experience and commitment to Barbados.  It also shines a light on his many accomplishments at our Barbados properties during the last eight years.  We congratulate him on this very important new role.
