Natural swimming pools gaining in popularity

The original pioneers of natural swimming pools, BIOTOP Landschaftsgestaltung GmbH, headquartered in Austria, has seen an increase in requests from the hotel and tourism industry for chemical-free natural swimming pools, to provide the ultimate luxury and sustainable guest attraction.

Most guests visiting luxury hotels expect to find a swimming pool, but the health risks, high maintenance costs and environmental impact of chlorinated swimming pools has led to many green hotels seeking out a natural alternative. Natural swimming pools are filtered purely by plants and environmentally friendly pumps without the use of any harmful chemicals. Natural pools also look beautiful all year round within a natural landscape and have the added benefit of being major attractions, not only for guests but also providing natural habitats for a host of insects and wildlife.

In the UK, BIOTOP partners have designed a pool for Oasis Lodge in Ledbury. The owners Diana and Roland Gardner had originally planned the wooden holiday lodge site as a luxury ‘glamping’ experience located in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. The addition of the natural pool into the design was an afterthought. However, the natural pool has become the key focal point in the development and Diana and Richard confess that it is without doubt Oasis Lodge’s unique selling point and is one of the primary reasons guests return. Diana said, “We see the guests get in the water and visibly start to relax and be rejuvenated by the natural experience. This is a very special place and provides something very beautiful for us and our guests to enjoy all year round. It is our Oasis.”

The BIOTOP group has almost 30 years’ experience in building high quality natural swimming pools and has built over 4,000 around Europe. The company now has partner companies around the world including the UK, USA and Australia. Recently BIOTOP was involved in the construction of a natural pool at The Garden Village resort recently opened in the town of Bled, Slovenia and also in the luxurious Plane Trees Lodge in Victoria, Australia.

Managing Director of BIOTOP, Peter Petrich said, “Natural swimming pools are not only sustainable, ecological and economical, but also beautiful to look at. With “less is more” in mind, luxury green hotels and resorts are following this trend very closely and benefiting from the expertise and the tried-and-tested quality of the natural pools BIOTOP and its partners have built over 29 years. Today, sustainability has become more than a watchword in the hotel and tourism sector. “Organic” has quite simply become chic. We are delighted the concept is being embraced by the hotel and leisure industries around the world.”
