Burj Al Arab’s role in marine research and sea turtle rehab

Marine conservationMore than just a beautiful display to wow guests, the aquariums at Burj Al Arab are heavily focused on marine education and scientific research.

Diners may be interested to know that the female zebra sharks they watch swim by while dining at Al Mahara have been reproducing without their male counterparts for more than five years. The studies behind this phenomenon have significantly been published in the Journal of Fish Biology.

And through its association with the UAE Wildlife Protection Office, Burj Al Arab aquariums also have played a major role in a sea turtle rehabilitation program for more than 10 years. Programs on the plight of the turtles are run to educate local school children as well as hotel guests and visitors.

In the video below, Warren Baverstock, Aquarium Operations Manager at Burj Al Arab, details more fully the hotel’s commitment to marine research and the support they provide the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project.
