Alfred Merkel new Executive Pastry Chef at Shangi-La Kuala Lumpur

Executive Pastry Chef Alfred MerkelShangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur announces the appointment of Alfred Merkel as its new executive pastry chef.

Mr Merkel was previously with Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok where he was Pastry Chef for three years, from 2011. There he was winner of the “Kempinski Dessert of the Year 2014”.

Chocolate and sugar showpieces, desserts, pastries and sourdough breads are the forte of Chef Merkel who is from Germany.

He first started his career with a three-year apprenticeship at Café Mittnacht, Bad Mergentheim, a traditional German cake shop and café in Germany.

He has done special training courses on sugar art at Sugar School Ewald Notter, chocolate desserts at Valrhona and sourdough bread at Bakery Academy, Weinheim, Germany.

The award-winning pastry chef was master confectioner at the School for Master Craftspeople in Cologne, the most reputable confectionery academy in Germany. He has also worked in Michelin-star restaurants in Germany.
