Royal Plaza on Scotts (RP) celebrates Singapore’s seventh night motor racing season with the display of a life-sized seashells race car, the first to be created in the world, at its newly renovated façade. The culinary team has created other life-sized race cars with pasta, chocolate, bread and macarons in previous years.
The spectacular structure measures 4.40 metres long, 1.90 metres wide and 1.30 metres tall, and took a dedicated team of 10 chefs and culinary staff 1130 hours to complete. The team was led by RP’s Executive Chef, Darren Ong.
Tying in with the hotel’s environmental initiatives, the culinary team used shells from seafood consumed at its international buffet restaurant, Carousel, to create the visually arresting race car. The types of shells collected include those of scallops, clams, mussels and oysters. A total of 14,880 shells were collected to decorate the car structure.
Shell Out for Charity joins in the celebration of SG50 with Community Chest. A Community Chest donation box has been placed beside the structure to encourage the public to shell out for charity. The hotel aims to raise $3,000 from the public and will match dollar-for-dollar for these contributions. On top of this, the total amount of funds raised will also be matched dollar-for-dollar by the government under the Care & Share movement led by Community Chest.
“RP takes pride in celebrating the nation’s night motor racing season and bringing some of the excitement to the Orchard area. We would also like to do our part for the less privileged with the creation of our life-sized race car to help raise awareness for the Care & Share movement by Community Chest and encourage our guests and patrons to support the efforts,” commented Patrick Fiat, General Manager of RP.
Guests also stand to win a 2D1N weekend stay in an Executive Suite with Club benefits and dinner for two at Carousel in the hotel’s online contest. To participate, guests can simply take a selfie with the car and guess the weight of the shells used and post their entries on Facebook page ‘Royal Plaza Singapore Hotel’ with their guess in the caption.
