The culinary team behind award-winning buffet restaurant, Carousel, gathered to set a new record with the longest bread and butter pudding in Singapore on Tuesday, 17 June 2014, in celebration of Royal Plaza on Scotts’ 40th anniversary. The event was graced by Mr Phillip Tan, Chairman of Community Chest, and the record was adjudicated by The Singapore Book of Records.
The culinary feat boasted 30 metres of the hotel’s signature bread and butter pudding, which recipe is as old as the hotel. It is also a favourite among guests at Carousel and the hotel has served 192.4 km of bread and butter pudding over the last 40 years, which is about the distance of Singapore’s coastline.
This 30-metre bread and butter pudding took the team of 32 chefs 55 hours of baking and used 150 loaves of white bread, 220 litres of cream, 75 kilograms of whole eggs and 80 litres of milk.
All 3000 portions of the bread and butter pudding were given out to the public in 1.5 hours after the adjudication of the record. Guests were invited to donate-as-you-wish for the bread and butter pudding. A total of $2618 was raised for Metta Preschool @ Punggol, a beneficiary of Community Chest. Donations were matched $1-to-$1 as part of the Care & Share Movement.
Royal Plaza on Scotts, which was awarded Best Employer 2013 by Aon Hewitt, also held a recruitment drive in conjunction with this charity event. More than 20 interested candidates who submitted their résumés to Human Resources at the recruitment booth also received a portion of the bread and butter pudding each. Some of the applicants were applying for culinary positions in the pastry kitchen who may help beat the record for the longest bread and butter pudding event the following year.
