The British Virgin Islands' luxury boutique resort, Biras Creek, is now offering three new interactive classes for horse lovers and equestrians of all levels. The resort is providing this unique experience to foster a connection with nature and encourage self-improvement by employing the calming characteristics of the Paso Fino breed.
Originally rescued from Puerto Rico in 2009, five Paso Fino horses now call Biras Creek their home. Each horse has its own story and a different journey that led them to Virgin Gorda. Paso Fino Horses are born with a distinct gait, specific only to their breed. With each hoof contacting the ground independently in a regular sequence, their gait creates a rapid, unbroken rhythm, which allows the rider to have a smooth, seemingly motionless ride. Paso Fino horses thrive in the warm climate of the Caribbean and are a great fit for the BVI resort.
The classes at Biras Creek provide a fun and memorable learning experience for visitors at all skill levels. Guests are welcome to visit and groom the horses at any time during their stay at the resort or they can enroll in one of the following three classes:
Empowerment Experience ($35): This class is intended for children and teaches them the general anatomy of a horse and includes a ride led by the instructor.
Natural Horsemanship Class ($55): This class is designed to help participants learn effective non-verbal communication in a comfortable setting. Guests are guided through the meditative motions of grooming and how to do so properly. Horses naturally mirror non-verbal communication back to their herd members (including humans). In this one-of-a-kind class, guests will get a glimpse of themselves from a totally different perspective.
Couples Retreat Class ($95): During this special class, the Natural Horsemanship technique is used to achieve a common goal. Each couple will work together while instructing the horse to complete a task through non-verbal communication. This requires both participants to read each other's body language and create a stable presence around the horse to achieve the end goal. This is a great class for anyone interested in improving their communication skills.
"As horse enthusiasts, we know first-hand the therapeutic elements that these animals can contribute to the quality of life," says Craig Stolzenfels, general manager, Biras Creek Resort. "In addition to wanting to rescue these horses, we felt they would be a great addition the Biras family by providing guests with this rustic and experiential opportunity."
Classes are currently available for guests of the resort and will be offered year-round. The introduction of the new equestrian program follows a recent half-million dollar renovation project that featured upgrades to each of Biras Creek's 31 private guest suites, along with enhancements to the picturesque outdoor pool, arrival dock area and Hilltop Restaurant.
