The world's first hotel school, the "Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne" was founded in 1893. During the mid – to late nineteenth century, Switzerland experienced an unprecedented boom in tourism. More than fifty Grand Hotels were built during this time, and these establishments required skilled employees and well-trained managers. Swiss hoteliers were the first to realize that hospitality was a profession, and that excellence could only be achieved with the help of well-educated staff.
It started with 27 students on 15 October in 1893, by 1951 the school had grown to 500 students from over 30 countries and now has more than 1800 students.
It is regarded as the world's pre-eminent hotel school with many graduates being famous and iconic hoteliers, including Kurt Wachtveitl of the Oriental in Bangkok, Felix Bieger of the Peninsula in Hong Kong and Hans Wiedemann of Badrutt's Palace Hotel in St Moritz. An alumni with more than 25,000 members have strongly supported not only the growths of our industry but also positively influenced the standards of many hotels around the world.
