Leading authority on the Chinese luxury consumer, Hurun Report publishes The Chinese Luxury Traveler (2013) for third time with ILTM

For the first time, Hurun Report reveals differences in travel preferences and behavior between luxury travelers in First and Second/Third Tier Cities

  • The number of annual overseas trips for Chinese luxury travelers is down from 3.2 to 2.8, and among Chinese super rich, down from last year’s 4.2 overseas trips to 3.4 this year
  • Chinese luxury travelers are spending more on shopping than any other nationality, on average €875 per trip
  • Industry sees sharp increase in spending on hotel rooms by Chinese luxury travelers and less or the same on food, hotel shopping, and spas
  • Chinese luxury traveler tour groups are getting smaller
  • 11% of Chinese travelers spend over US$10,000 (excluding flights) per trip
  • Spring Festival and October holiday are popular travel periods for luxury travel but research shows increase in travel during non-peak times

  • Shangri-La is the most preferred hotel among Chinese luxury travelers
  • France, the US, and Singapore are the preferred international luxury destinations for Chinese luxury travelers. Half of the top ten are European countries; Switzerland, the UK, Italy, and Germany all perform well
  • Shanghai’s luxury travelers prefer Asian countries such as Korea and Japan more than Beijingers, who prefer European countries.

Hong Kong, June 3, 2013 — This is the third consecutive year that Hurun Report has cooperated with ILTM Asia to publish The Chinese Luxury Traveler (2013). This report attempts to calculate the number of Chinese luxury travelers, evaluates their consumption patterns, travel habits as well as key market trends over the last year. In addition, this report analyses the purchase of luxury products and examines the impact of Chinese wealth overseas.
