Recovering from an illness, spending an inheritance and divorce are some of the reasons for going on holiday, according to Kuoni research.
The operator's Special Occasions Travel Survey, which questioned 819 Briton via social media channels during December 2012, identified 19 key reasons for travel and the top destinations for these trips.
While the obvious reasons included special birthdays, cited by 61% of respondents, honeymoons (49%) and wedding anniversaries (40%), the survey also revealed other popular motives for travelling as: a treat after a period of hard work (40%); fulfilling a personal ‘bucket list' (19%); and getting a new relationship off to a flying start (14%).
Recovering from an illness was cited by 7%, spending part of an inheritance by 4%, babymoons by 3% and divorce by 2%.
The five most popular destinations for special birthdays were the US, Italy, the Caribbean/Maldives and the UK, while the three most popular for the bucket list were the US, Australia and the Maldives.
For those celebrating/commiserating after a divorce the most popular destination was Thailand.
Derek Jones, Kuoni's managing director, commented: ‘Time away with our loved ones is so precious, to many it could be the true meaning of luxury and for others it's the stuff family memories are made from.
‘Whatever one's motives, taking a holiday is a landmark in our busy lives, something to keep us going as we look forward to it, and sustain us as we reminisce over it.'
