Meliá Shanghai Hongqiao will be brand’s eighth property in China

Meliá Hotels International has made further progress to ensure growth in China with the announcement of a new hotel in Shanghai, which will become its eighth property in the country.

The new Meliá Shanghai Hongqiao is part of Lidoway project, developed by Golden United Group, a major urban complex in Hongqiao that will also feature a wide range of commercial and entertainment facilities, dining outlets, green areas and high-end residential villas.

Meliá ShanghaI Hongqiao, scheduled to open in July 2016, will consist of 190 rooms and will provide wide meeting rooms, two F&B outlets as well as an executive lounge.

Hongqiao is expected to become the new centre of west Shanghai and business hub for the Yangze River Delta region thanks to its integration with the Hongqiao Transportation Hub (Airport & Railway). The hotel will be very close to the new National Convention and Exhibition Center (former China Expo Exhibition Center), the world largest exhibition complex, with total floor space of 1.47 million square meters and capacity to accommodate up to 300,000 people per day.

In 2014, Hongqiao Airport handled 37,960,200 passengers, a growth of 21.3% over 2010, making it the 4th busiest airport in mainland China and the 21st busiest in the world. On the other hand, Hongqiao Railway station is the largest railway station in Asia, with a total area of 1.3 million square meters.

The Asia – Pacific region has become one of the main strategic growth areas for the hotel company. Meliá Hotels International strengthened its corporate structure in 2011 with the creation of a corporate hub in Shanghai to boost awareness and expansion in this market and to improve the scope of partnerships with Chinese companies. With this first hotel in Shanghai, the Company aims to further push its presence in China and in the Asia-Pacific region.
