Villa Dorothéa, a unique new boutique hotel in Lisbon’s Lapa district, occupying a beautifully restored 19th century hamlet, has now opened its doors in the city. Set across five interconnected houses, the new 20-room residence, designed by LACASTA Interior Design Studio, in partnership with stylist Carla Kottmann, unfolds through cobbled pathways, quiet courtyards, and terraces scented with jasmine and bougainvillea, inviting guests to settle naturally into the pace and rituals of local life. At the centre of Villa Dorothéa sits The Secret, the property’s intimate 25 seat gastrobar extending between a hidden patio and rooftop terrace, a rare feature in this part of Lisbon.
Designed to make guests feel immediately at home, Villa Dorothéa has no formal lobby – instead the hotel invites guests to follow footpaths paved with traditional Portuguese stonework, passing ceramic tributes to the area’s fishing heritage and historic tiled plaques that gently connect the house, hotel, and surrounding city.
Shadow, texture and Lisbon’s golden evening light shape its intimate atmosphere, from unhurried mornings in the courtyard to candlelit evenings enjoying music, conversation, and, from its rooftop terrace, sunset views across Lisbon’s skyline.
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
Curated as a private micro-neighbourhood within Lapa, the architecture of Villa Dorothea strikes the perfect balance between privacy and connection. Dating back to 1878, the houses, which reside in one of Lisbon’s oldest historic quarters, were originally home to the families of the city’s fishermen, and its layered history is present within the property, where preserved architectural details and semi-public passageways maintain the feeling of a small village hidden within the city.
Its residential spirit extends to the interiors. The design narrative, conceived by LACASTA Interior Design Studio and Carla Kottmann, takes its cue from the character of the five original houses and preserves the individual identity of each, allowing the architecture, structure, and light to shape each space. Its soft tones and tactile palette of stone, linen, velvet, wood, and marble, combine with contemporary furnishings that sit alongside collected objects, books, and decorative pieces to create a sense of refined informality, lending the rooms the familiarity and character of a private residence.
HISTORY & LOCATION
Lapa is one of Lisbon’s most distinguished residential neighbourhoods. From the 16th century onwards, the area became known for the palaces and estates of noble families and prosperous merchants, later attracting the Portuguese aristocracy and bourgeoisie. The arrival of embassies and diplomatic residences in the early 20th century further shaped the discreet, cosmopolitan character that Lapa retains today.
Tradition Signature – the boutique hospitality group founded by Jacob Perez Toledano – wanted to preserve the heritage and spirit of the property, creating a hospitality experience centred on human connection. The hotel is named after Dorothéa, the daughter of the building’s original landlord’s, while the pathways crossing the estate remain officially registered within Lisbon’s city cadastre, reinforcing Villa Dorothéa’s connection to its Lapa setting and intrinsically residential character.
Known for its graceful architecture, colourful streets and close proximity to Santos, Estrela and the Tagus River, Villa Dorothéa’s location in Lapa offers guests a truly authentic experience of the city. The laid-back neighbourhood houses some of the city’s most talked about restaurants – including Skizzo, Danoi and Familjen – alongside a host of independent design shops, artists’ studios and artisanal coffee spots. From Villa Dorothéa, guests can immerse themselves in its local creative scene and explore many of Lisbon’s cultural landmarks on foot before returning to the calm of their own home away from home.
DINING AT VILLA DORETHÉA
At the heart of the property is The Secret, the hotel’s intimate 25-seat gastrobar extending between a secluded courtyard and a rooftop overlooking the city. Conceived as both a gathering place for guests and a discreet address for Lisbon insiders, this cosmopolitan, all-day dining destination draws modern inspiration from the city’s culture of long evenings, shared plates, and conversation.
The culinary programme combines Portuguese products, chic brasserie influences and highly-curated sourcing to deliver an innovative and elevated take on the convivial dining traditions of Lisbon. The locally-led menu is centred on the integrity of produce, seasonality, and technical precision, reinterpreting Portuguese sharing traditions through a refined, contemporary lens, serving up bistronomy style small plates alongside a sophisticated drinks programme.
The curated beverage offering is similarly anchored in Portuguese culture – signature creative cocktails are inspired by Luís de Camões’ Os Lusíadas, reinterpreting the poem’s maritime narratives and mythological figures through smoky, citrus, and floral notes. Its cocktail list is complemented by a selection of excellent Portuguese wines, Champagnes, and spirits.
Available at the bar throughout the day, Villa Dorothéa’s Honesty Cart allows guests to make themselves at home – helping themselves to a selection of infused waters, kombuchas, teas, fresh and dried fruits, nuts, and o bolo caseiro do dia – the homemade cake of the day. During summer months, the afternoons will see the roaming pantry cart drift through the patio, offering guests an al fresco treat.
Breakfast at Villa Dorothéa celebrates the simple pleasures of the neighbourhood, with specialty coffee from nearby award-winning roastery Filtrô and aromatic bread delivered fresh each morning by local artisan bakery Pão do Pastor.
WELLNESS, LAPA, AND LISBON’S SLOWER SIDE
At the centre of the house, a library curated in partnership with the Lisbon bookshop Salted Books invites guests to slow down among literary classics – many of which feature surprise notes tucked between their pages – chessboards, backgammon set, and objects collected over time. Launching later this summer, the Villa Suppers will bring guests and Lisbon locals together around long communal tables, drawing inspiration from the tradition of Portuguese family lunches. Its ongoing social calendar will also include a series of events throughout the year such as sunset DJ sessions on the roof terrace, Champagne rituals, and wine tastings with local producers, among other exciting cultural programming.
Wellness features naturally throughout the stay – each room has its own yoga mat and accessories, allowing for private practice, while group classes are available at a preferred rate in partnership with LX Portal Yoga Studio across the street. In-room signature Swedish massages by wellness pioneer Cristina Lobo can also be arranged on request.
To ensure a restorative night’s sleep, the property has introduced a dedicated pillow menu, offering a choice of Cooling Gel Pillow, an ergonomic memory foam pillow designed to regulate body temperature and provide optimal head and neck support, and an Aromatherapy Memory Foam Pillow, a medium-firm pillow infused with CBD, lavender, essential oils, and chamomile to promote relaxation.
Beyond the property itself, Villa Dorothéa remains closely connected to Lapa’s daily rituals.
