Teranka Formentera opens for its first full season on 28th April. Set on the bohemian, Balearic island, the hotel enters the season under new ownership; Luxury Hotel Partners (LHP), umbrella brand behind the legendary Marbella Club and co-owners of Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay. The boutique hideaway – a new venture for LHP and now a member of SLH – welcomes new garden dining, a rooftop lounge with spectacular island views, a curated selection of artwork and a unique wellbeing programme anchored in nature.
Nestled amongst a canopy of pine trees, Teranka is located moments from the azure waters of Formentera’s sought-after Migjorn Beach, which stretches across 6km of the island’s wilder southern side. The most southerly island of the Balearics and accessible only by boat, Teranka embodies the essence of its creative yet laidback roots, paying homage to the Island’s unspoilt natural beauty, its poetic energy and comforting sense of absolute freedom.
Coined by the hotel’s original owner, Teranka takes its name from the words “tierra” meaning land and “ancla” meaning anchor – this Idea of being connected to the sea while being firmly grounded to the land, of entering a safe harbour, is evident throughout the hotel. From its secluded location and rooms through to dining and spiritual touch, makes Teranka a one-of-a-kind lifestyle hotel with a certain rock and roll wildness.
The 35 guest rooms and suites are spread across three handcrafted stone buildings each awash with natural light and fine linens combined with soothing colour palette of tones taking their cue from the sea, land and sky. Suitable for couples, groups and families alike, the ‘Mar’ (sea) rooms surround the hotel’s relaxing pool area and face out to sea; nature lovers will enjoy being tucked in one of the ‘Tierra’ (earth) rooms, with their own private terrace gardens hidden amongst the pine trees while ‘Cielo’ (sky) rooms provide larger living spaces and first floor suites with secluded roof terraces. For those special occasions, one or all of the buildings can be booked for private celebrations.
For dining, welcoming both guests and locals alike, the Teranka Garden is inspired by a traditional finca inviting guests to dine in a laid-back setting but with toes in the sand. The outdoor kitchen and bar lead to an expansive terrace and sand garden that transforms after sunset into a magical twinkling al fresco space set amongst the pine and olive trees. Menus are focused on showcasing the best in fresh island staples from both the land and sea with flavours inspired in Formentera and beyond. For an extra special dining experience, the outdoor Chef’s Table seats up to 14 people where guests can try signature dishes. Upstairs at Teranka’s Rooftop Lounge, guests are invited to soak up some of the best views across Migjorn beach, perfect sunsets and the surrounding pine canopies while tapas, crudos and bespoke cocktails are served.
Wellbeing at Teranka is synonymous with tapping into nature through all senses – from a rosemary infused signature massage ritual to sunset energy healing and immersive sound meditation. This year, the hotel has partnered with Chris Connors – wellbeing consultant and Founder of OPO, a guided meditation app that delivers expertly curated soundscapes. In a first for the island, Chris has developed a bespoke digital portal exclusively for Teranka’s guests to provide three self-guided immersive sound meditations amongst the hotel’s grounds inspired by the nature of the island. A summer programme of Balearic visiting practitioners will be introduced later in the season to strengthen Teranka’s offering, alongside two dates for dedicated retreats to be held In Teranka’s shoulder season.
This season, London native and Ibiza resident, Katrina Phillips has worked alongside Teranka co owner, Jennica Arazi, to curate a bespoke collection of pieces, ranging from stand-alone Installations to abstract photographs and commissioned pieces that speak to the elements of Teranka – air, sea, and land. “I chose artists whose work reflects Teranka‘s relationship with form, nature, history and space…I sought a poetic, philosophical and joyful understanding of our relationship with the planet. Pieces that are contemporary, somewhat rebellious, and yet elegant and unforced,” says Katrina.
A collection comprised of mainly female artists, both local and international, treasures Include a seven-metre long wall from Formentera resident, Anna Ametller, a shoal of fish and sea creatures made from beachcombed materials from the shore of the island. Or a collection of pieces from Griffin Prize winner Elizabeth Rose Langford, using natural pigments of Ibiza and dried Posidonia to highlight the awareness of our surroundings.
Outside, the tranquil sand garden leads to vegetable and herb gardens, shaded yoga and sundowner meditation terraces hidden amongst the trees, dreamt up for discreet celebrations, wellbeing rituals, and moments of relaxation. Shaded sunbeds dotted throughout the grounds offer guests an alternative to the hotel’s loungers on the sandy beachfront or poolside.
