Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay has achieved Bronze Benchmarking recognition from EarthCheck, the world’s leading business advisory group specialising in sustainability for the tourism sector. This achievement reflects the resort’s long-standing commitment to reducing its environmental footprint, protecting Fiji’s fragile ecosystems, and delivering world-class hospitality to its guests.
Nestled on Fiji’s tranquil western coast, the five-star resort is an overwater retreat for sophisticated travellers and has woven sustainability into every aspect of its 103-hectare footprint. EarthCheck’s independent benchmarking process assessed the resort against global best practice, with Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay outperforming regional averages across key sustainability indicators, including:
- Energy consumption: 69.8 MJ per guest night, well below the regional average of 158.8 MJ
- Greenhouse gas emissions: 9.1 kg CO₂-e per guest night, outperforming the regional average of 14 kg
- Waste to landfill: just 3.7 litres per guest night, significantly below the regional average of 6.3 litres.
These achievements are the result of years of investment in energy-efficient systems, the elimination of single-use plastics, and strong partnerships with suppliers and local communities. In 2024, the resort installed a 79.8kWp solar panel grid-connect system at Fish Bar, offsetting the majority of its daytime power consumption and further reducing its carbon footprint. The resort’s commitment to sustainability also extends to phasing out single-use plastic amenities in guest rooms, preventing more than 2,048 kg of plastic waste each year.
Beyond daily operations, the resort invites guests to participate in Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy, a hands-on sustainability that includes tree and mangrove planting, coral restoration, and beach clean-ups. Since its launch, the program has led to the planting of more than 3,100 mangroves, the creation of 13 fish houses, and the transplantation of 414 kg of coral to help regenerate Fiji’s marine ecosystem.
“Achieving the Bronze Benchmarking marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey,” said Silvano Dressino, General Manager, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay. “This recognition reinforces our commitment to spearheading sustainable practices that align with Marriott’s global goals, while also giving back to the local community in which we operate. As a Fijian-owned resort, we are dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Fiji for generations to come.”
