Small Luxury Hotels celebrates first anniversary of its considerate collection

One year ago, Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) launched the Considerate Collection with 25 founding members of actively sustainable luxury hotels. Today the luxury brand adds a further five properties to the collection and celebrates 43 hotels, almost 40,000 trees planted in collaboration with TreeSisters, a first-of-its-kind partnership with new sustainability platform Weeva, and a collaboration with luxury amenities brand Vanity Group.

Over 70% growth in first year of the Considerate Collection

The Considerate Collection has grown by over 70% in the last year to 43 outstanding hotels, each displaying strong alignment with partner Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s (GSTC) framework. Twenty per cent of SLH’s overall new hotel additions this year have been Considerate Collection hotels, as the brand increasingly attracts more properties of this kind. The latest additions include Casale Panayiotis, Cyprus, a village restoration project turned luxury hotel, which rests quietly in the Troodos mountains, representing a regenerative alternative to beachside stays. Joining also is Barracuda Hotel & Villas, Itacaré, Brazil, a secluded all-suite retreat effortlessly blending its Bahian roots with the owners’ Swedish heritage. The 26-room property has sustainability in its soul and introduces guests to the raw beauty of Itacaré. 15th-century, restored farming estate Villa Petriolo in Tuscany is another welcome addition with its Michelin Green Star restaurant and 0km approach to its organic offering. An SLH member since 2005, Aleenta Resort & Spa Phuket is one of two new additions from Thailand. The other is Zeavola Resort in Krabi, renowned for its strong sense of community extended to the local Chao Ley (the people of the Sea).

Almost 40,000 trees and counting in support of TreeSisters

SLH debuted its partnership with TreeSisters last year to coincide with the launch of Considerate Collection and other notable corporate commitments. Each SLH room night booked and stayed using an SLH INVITED member rate includes a donation to plant up to two trees with TreeSisters.  To date, SLH has planted almost 40,000 trees – the equivalent of three times the size of London’s Hyde Park.

 SLH x Weeva

SLH enters a first-of-its-kind partnership with the new sustainability platform Weeva, which launched in October 2022. SLH is the first hotel group to partner with the uniquely designed platform that caters specifically to small hotels and accommodation providers, enabling properties to adopt measurable and holistic sustainability practices. The partnership allows all 520 SLH member hotels to benefit from an exclusive and preferential annual rate on the platform. All current Considerate Collection hotels will enjoy complimentary access to the service for the first year, funded in whole by SLH.

 SLH x VANITY GROUP

SLH also announced an exclusive brand amenity partnership with VANITY GROUP earlier this month. Known as hospitality’s house of beauty, VANITY GROUP licenses the most sought-after fashion, beauty, haircare, skincare, fine fragrance, lifestyle and spa brands to create unforgettable overnight experiences. The luxury provider proudly partners with the likes of KARL LAGERFELD and Jo Loves by Jo Malone CBE and has built a reputation for elevating hotel amenities from essential items to an experience that rivals even the sweetest suite. They have implemented responsible and sustainable practices for their products, packaging and processes, including incorporating Post-Consumer Recycled and repurposed OceanBound material into their packaging, creating accessories made from Sugarcane, Kraft Paper and Cornstarch, and developing 100% plastic free tubes made from recyclable aluminium and compostable caps.

“Achieving 43 hotels within a year for the Considerate Collection is a milestone we’re incredibly proud of”, says Daniel Luddington, VP of Development, Small Luxury Hotels of the World.  He adds: “These hotels demonstrate enormous effort and continue to inspire the whole SLH portfolio, making sustainable luxury feel urgent but within reach and without overwhelming.  Measuring impact is key for SLH, and our partnership with Weeva is an exciting one which will help us to report and display more transparency not only for the Considerate Collection hotels but eventually within our whole portfolio.”

SLH continues its corporate sustainability journey and has undertaken work to audit its HQ* C02 footprint, averaging 1,514kg per SLH employee for 2021. Richard Hyde, managing director, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, said. “The internal work is continuous. As we strive to improve our business practices, we’ve used the data collated and worked with ecollective to set a seven per cent C02 reduction target YOY for our team in 2023 by engaging with the right suppliers and adjusting our business travel priorities, among other strategies.” He adds: “Our footprint must get smaller and smaller each year even as we scale up the business.”
