SiteMinder analysis reveals France’s online hotel bookings are back on the up, set to remain steady

An analysis by SiteMinder, the global hotel industry’s leading guest acquisition platform, today reveals that online hotel bookings in France are set to increase four percent in 2019 – a growth rate not seen by the nation’s hoteliers in four years.

Online hotel bookings have fluctuated from a two percent decline in 2016 to a two percent uplift in 2018, and data from Euromonitor International suggests the four percent growth expected this year will remain consistent until 2023 when the rate will rise marginally to five percent.

The expected five percent growth rate expected in 2023 will mark the first time since 2012 that online hotel bookings in France will rise above four percent.

SiteMinder’s analysis comes as it launches State of the Nation 2019: How big is the opportunity for hotel bookings in France?, a report revealing that the five percent rise in online hotel bookings in 2023 will be driven, in large part, to the 2023 Rugby World Cup. That year, 105 million tourists are expected in the country, including 40 million who arrive by air and 53 million by land.

We are witnessing that online hotel bookings in France are once again on the up for local hoteliers, who have the opportunity to capitalise on this trend and invite guests from all over the world into their properties,” says Antoine Aubrun, Country Manager – France at SiteMinder. “A personalised and superior guest experience remains key, and with the right technology French hotels can leverage global events such as the 2023 Rugby World Cup and 2024 Olympic Games to their advantage. We urge hoteliers who are not already working on their marketing and distribution strategy, to prepare for these events, to start now.”

Other findings from SiteMinder’s analysis include the steady contribution of direct bookings to total online hotel bookings. Since 2005, direct bookings have grown from constituting 22 percent of all online hotel bookings to constituting 27 percent this year. By 2023, the contribution of direct bookings to total online hotel bookings is expected to reach 29 percent.
