Habitas, the rapidly growing global eco-hospitality group, has officially opened Caravan Agafay, marking the group’s first presence in Morocco, and its second on the African continent. Caravan Agafay, an extension of the Habitas family, is rooted in play, imagination, and connection with the natural environment. With existing properties in three continents, Habitas has expanded further into Morocco enabling guests an opportunity to experience the country’s diverse terrain with further expansion plans on the coast and the iconic Atlas Mountains.
Located just 45 minutes from downtown Marrakech, Caravan Agafay embraces nomadic Amazigh (Berber) culture and traditions around communal living to create an immersive glamping experience for travellers seeking adventure, discovery, and human connection. Caravan Agafay spans five hectares and features 20 stylish Moroccan canvas wall tents, a gourmet restaurant using locally sourced food products, two swimming pools, a horse stable, outdoor cinema, yoga/wellness centre, and Habitas’ signature agora communal gathering spaces.
Caravan Agafay balances elegance with a bohemian aesthetic, a glamping concept that seems reminiscent of a nostalgic sleep-away camp, allowing guests to connect with their inner child. Each tent offers sweeping views across the desert and, in close distance, views of the jagged peaks of the Atlas Mountains and comes equipped with an ensuite bathroom, king sized bed and outdoor Berber lounge seating. Nestled amongst the dunes with sweeping views of the rocky desert and surrounding Atlas Mountains, each tranquil room is inspired by local culture and nature. The tents and lodges feature artisanal interiors and design touches, including furniture and decorative items such as rugs, pottery and cushions sourced from local artisan cooperatives based in the Atlas Mountains and souks in Marrakech. Comfortable bedding, organic bath amenities, complimentary wifi and private outdoor, Berber lounge areas, complete the experience.
“Following the recent success of Caravan AlUla, we felt now was the time to grow this immersive concept into a new continent and were drawn to the striking landscape of Agafay,” comments Oliver Ripley, Co-Founder & CEO of Habitas.“The project marks our first in Morocco, but we have exciting plans to expand inside the county further very soon.”
The surrounding desert delivers a chromatic panorama of light, shadows, and a palette of colours during the day, and a dark night illuminated by an infinity of stars. The lack of development, noise and light pollution makes Caravan Agafay the perfect escape from busy city life. In keeping with Habitas’ programming ethos of experiences centred around exploration and locally inspired rituals, guests can fill their days and nights at Caravan Agafay with Horseback Riding, Camel Trekking, Desert Survival Skills, Intimate Music Experiences, Yoga & Mindfulness. Stargazing is also part of Caravan Agafay’s programming for guests and is hosted by an expert guide. By looking through a laser and telescope, guests can admire various constellations and planets, followed by stories and legends of the sky. Additional programming includes visits to local Berber communities supported by Habitas RISE, Habitas’ impact arm.
Targeted towards millennials or “experience seekers with a pioneering spirit,” Caravan Agafay aims to provide its travellers adventure without boundaries, connecting like-minded explorers on a non-traditional, unforgettable journey. Additionally, for every guest that stays at Caravan Agafay, Habitas will donate $10 (£8) to its RISE Fund – the brand’s impact initiative to support local communities, create jobs and give back to local environmental and social causes.
