Sunway Group has accelerated its efforts to combat COVID-19 in Malaysia by providing the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre (SPCC), which is one of the largest in the country, rent-free to support the ongoing National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (NCIP).
Under the NCIP, an estimated 1.8 million Malaysians in Selangor, one of the most densely populated Malaysian states, will be vaccinated at SPCC as the country of 32 million people aims to achieve herd immunity by inoculating at least 80 percent of its population. Providing SPCC rent-free in support of this important national initiative forms part of Sunway’s commitment to help the nation battle against the pandemic. Separately, Sunway Medical Centre in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur has also been designated as a public vaccination centre to ramp up the vaccination efforts in the community.
Since March 2020, Sunway has committed more than MYR50 million (US$12.1m) to support a range of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts that benefit the most vulnerable and impoverished communities throughout Malaysia, as well as thousands of workers serving on the frontlines.
The launch of this mega vaccination centre was officiated by Dato’ Indera Dr. Sha’ari Bin Ngadiman, Selangor’s State Health Director, and Dato’ Johary bin Anuar, District Officer of Petaling Land & District Office and Director of Petaling District Disaster Management Committee, alongside Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah AO.
Dato’ Indera Dr. Sha’ari commented: “SPCC vaccination centre will allow for about 5,000 people to be vaccinated per day. With a space of 150,000 square feet (13,940m²), we are able to mobilise our resources in a single location and accelerate vaccinations. This is especially important right now as the threat of the fourth wave is a possibility.”
Dato’ Johary bin Anuar added: “The speed in getting more vaccinations done is more imminent than ever. We need more corporations like Sunway Group who quickly summed up the situation and provided the SPCC rent-free to support the government’s aim to achieve 80 percent herd immunity. Its strategic location that links public transportation as well as free ample parking makes it convenient for the public.”
Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah said that despite the unprecedented challenges of the global pandemic, Sunway’s commitment to nation-building and sustainable development remains firm and will intensify the group’s effort to help the nation swiftly rebound and recover.
“It is my personal belief that no corporation can live apart from the community it serves. As such, we strongly believe in doing well by doing good. In line with these values, we have committed more than MYR50 million since the lockdown was imposed. You have my pledge that we will continue to help the communities we serve and stand by them in their hour of need,” Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah commented.
In March 2020, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah was appointed by the Prime Minister of Malaysia to serve on the country’s Economic Action Council (EAC), a special taskforce that advises on the delivery of the country’s Economic Stimulus Package, which is supporting Malaysians through the pandemic.
Vaccinations at SPCC are conducted by fully-trained medical professionals from the Petaling district health office, in accordance with strict safety and social distancing regulations.
For the benefit of those getting vaccinated at SPCC, Sunway has set up a one-stop information hub at www.sunway.city/kualalumpur/lindung-diri-lindung-semua, which offers useful tips such as free parking areas, suitable attire and information for wheelchair users.
