Chinese tourists forced to seek new travel destinations

According to the latest data from Trip.com Group (former Ctrip), Chinese multinational online travel company that provides services including accommodation reservation, transportation ticketing, packaged tours and corporate travel management, bookings by Chinese tourists traveling to foreign destinations spiked by 640% during the Lunar New Year festival vs the same period last year, while foreign hotel bookings have quadrupled.

Long-Haul travel sentiment to Europe improves despite high global inflation

 The desire for overseas travel in 2023 has increased significantly in large travel markets compared to a year ago. Over 60% of potential travellers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, and the US intend to travel long-haul in 2023, with Europe being top of mind. Travel sentiment to Europe in the first four months of the year has also improved, with the most notable year-over-year increases observed in China (+21 points) and Brazil (+13 points). The exception to these positive trends is Japan, with 27% of respondents enthusiastic about long-haul trips in 2023 as a whole and 13% between January and April.

Personal Finances are main barrier to travel long-haul this autumn

The European Travel Commission (ETC) and Eurail BV published the latest Long-Haul Travel Barometer (LHTB) on 3/2022, which provides insights on traveller sentiment for September – December 2022. The report reveals that the appetite for overseas travel in the last months of 2022 has improved, with Brazil (150p), Canada (136p) and the US (126p) showing the greatest rise in the sentiment index compared to summer. However, the desire to visit Europe has stagnated in key markets, showing only marginal improvements.
