According to the latest China Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics (LE), China’s total hotel construction pipeline stands at 3,659 projects/680,959 rooms at the end of Q1‘23, down 1% by projects and 3% by rooms year-over-year (YOY). While project counts may be down YOY, domestic and international travel gained significant momentum during the first quarter. The reopening of borders and national holidays has largely aided in the increased demand for travel accommodations, which is expected to continue this upward trajectory through the second quarter. As a matter of fact, in Q1, the country’s economy grew the fastest it had in over a year, showing people are eager to return to travel and normalcy.
Year-Over-Year Growth in the Hotel Construction Pipeline for the Top 25 U.S. Markets as a Group
In the Q1 2023 U.S. Construction Pipeline Trend Report released by Lodging Econometrics (LE), LE analysts report, that as a group, year-over-year the hotel construction pipeline has grown in the Top 25 Markets in the U.S. The top five U.S. markets with the largest hotel construction pipelines at the close of the first quarter are led by Dallas with, record-high project and room counts of 184 projects/21,810 rooms. Following are Atlanta with 144 projects/18,242 rooms, Los Angeles with 118 projects/19,066 rooms, Phoenix with 117 projects/16,100 rooms, and Nashville with 115 projects/15,354 rooms.
U.S. Hotel Construction pipeline increases in all project stages year-over-year
In the latest United States Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics (LE), analysts report that construction pipeline projects in the U.S. continue to increase, standing at 5,545 projects/658,207 rooms at the close of Q1 2023. Up 9% by both projects and rooms year-over-year (YOY); project totals at Q1 ‘23 are just 338 projects, or 5.7%, behind the all-time high of 5,883 projects recorded in Q2 2008.

Dallas is tops with the largest hotel construction pipeline in the U.S.
According to the fourth quarter United States Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics (LE), the U.S. market with the largest hotel construction pipeline by projects is Dallas with a record high count of 176 projects, accounting for 20,790 rooms. Following Dallas is Atlanta with 145 projects/18,100 rooms, Los Angeles with 122 projects/19,419 rooms, Phoenix with 116 projects/16,229 rooms, and Nashville with 106 projects/14,198 rooms.

Three franchise companies account for 66% of the projects in the U.S. construction pipeline
According to the quarterly United States Construction Pipeline Trend Report from Lodging Econometrics (LE), the franchise companies with the largest construction pipelines at the end of Q3 2022 are led by Marriott International with 1,385 projects/168,725 rooms. Following Marriott is Hilton Worldwide with 1,351 projects/152,383 rooms and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) with 787 projects/79,382 rooms. Combined, these three companies account for 66% of the projects and 64% of the rooms in the total pipeline. Each company has seen growth year-over-year.
