good neighbor, a neighborhood home for global brands and locally-designed goods, is announcing a new hospitality concept, guesthouse opening in Baltimore in late summer 2023. A hospitality alternative that features the touchstones of what our neighbors have come to expect: seven unique, design-immersive, thoughtfully curated spaces that are a fully shoppable experience. guesthouse is the full realization of staying at a loved one’s home.
Shawn Chopra designed each room with heritage in mind and a love for modern design. Materials from Baltimore, Egypt, North Africa, and India, where Shawn and his wife are from, informed his design decisions. Shawn pushed to reimagine larger landmarks, such as the Pyramids of Giza or the step-wells in India, into interior details, such as the lobby bar and the powder room sink, while bringing them to life with a sustainable team of makers from Baltimore and materials sourced locally.
Shawn’s design background is rooted in childhood memories. As a son of immigrant parents from India, who worked hard to build a life stateside, Shawn’s parents’ would buy an old home in lesser condition and renovate while living in it over some time before moving onto another fixer-upper – this led Shawn to become immersed with interiors, renovations, and design growing up gutting, painting, framing and furnishing numerous homes over the years. Vacations were never a common practice for his family, except for visiting India every few years, specifically the town of Chandigarh, India, where Shawn’s parents met. Chandigarh is one of the design capitals of the world. It is a historic UNESCO site now, as it was the first modern brutalist city designed by French architect Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeannerret at the request of India’s first PM after British rule, Jawaharlal Nehru. The city was inherently built to settle India’s religiously diverse population and refugees and be a home and safe space for everyone no matter what background – to do such, clever and open design was needed. Likewise, this idea informed Shawn’s initial design brief and direction of a good neighbor in 2019.
good neighbor was founded by Shawn Chopra and his wife, Anne Morgan with the goal of creating a seamless, multi-touchpoint retail concept, built around being a good neighbor and welcoming people into your home.
It combines their love of design with their immigrant culture of abundant hospitality — going above and beyond for their guests in all areas including food & drink – anticipating and curating needs of each guest fostering an open community filled with thoughtful products, and sparking creativity and conversation around art, design, fashion, music and film.
