Luxury resort Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas has appointed Rolex Phang Chyuan Shei as the property’s new People and Culture Director. In his new role, Rolex will be in charge of maintaining employee relations and ensuring the implementation of Anantara’s mission and talent strategy, as well as focusing on employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, and compliance.
Rolex joins Anantara Desaru Coast from Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel, where he has provided expertise and support in performance management and team member relations since 2018, first as Training Manager and, following a series of promotions, as Human Resources Manager and Assistant Director of Human Resources. While with Renaissance Johor Bahru, Rolex received the prestigious Spirit to Serve Our Communities 2020 accolade in Marriott’s International APEC Human Resources Awards.
An active member of the community throughout his career, Rolex has held the title of chairman of the Malaysian Association of Hotels – Human Resources Johor Chapter since 2019. As Chairman, Rolex acts as a liaison between Johor hotels and Johor Labour Department in handling labour disputes and solving other HR-related issues.
A lifelong student, Rolex is also an adjunct lecturer at Wawasan Open University. He has been tutoring bachelor’s degree and diploma students on entrepreneurship development since 2016, teaching such subjects as effective leadership, organisational behaviour and principles and practice of management. Earlier in his career, Rolex spent four years in human resources and training and development at Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour, a Shangri-La hotel in Johor, and gained experience across such industries as automotive and entertainment.
A Malaysian national, Rolex holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Management at University Putra Malaysia, a bachelor’s degree in marketing management from University Teknologi Malaysia, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in business administration at Wawasan Open University, Malaysia. He enjoys emceeing events and hosting ceremonies.
