Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street has marked its official opening with a ceremony attended by Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece and more than 100 guests, including representatives from Accor, developer and owners Spacious Group, industry partners and the hotel’s leadership team.
Held on Tuesday 10 March, the event featured a traditional Chinese lion dance and blessing ceremony, followed by a ribbon cutting to mark the opening of the $90 million development. The property recently debuted as the largest purpose-built hotel to open in Melbourne’s CBD this year.
Adrian Williams, Chief Operating Officer of Accor in the Pacific region, joined Justin Phillips, General Manager of Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street, and Angela Liang, Managing Director of Spacious, to commemorate the milestone alongside invited guests and stakeholders.
The 18-storey property brings 195 rooms, including six suites, to 492 La Trobe Street on the western edge of Melbourne’s CBD and represents the first new-build Mercure to open in the city centre in more than a decade.
Drawing on the site’s former life as a tinsmith factory, the hotel balances subtle industrial detailing with a calm, contemporary aesthetic. Guest rooms are framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that maximise natural light, while the property’s signature Suite 1603 features a freestanding bathtub positioned against skyline views.
Guests attending the opening were then welcomed to Foundry, the hotel’s restaurant and terrace bar on level six overlooking Flagstaff Gardens, where canapés and drinks were served and remarks were delivered from the terrace. The venue includes a 30-seat bar anchored by a six-metre red marble bench, alongside a 130-seat restaurant and a 60-person outdoor terrace.
Located within walking distance of Flagstaff Gardens, Southern Cross Station, Marvel Stadium and Queen Victoria Market, the hotel introduces a refined new stay on Melbourne’s western CBD edge.
